Intellectual disabilities such as ASD, English being a second language and Down Syndrome create mental and social barriers. The barrier forces restrictions through learning and affects self and personal care. Each particularly would see periods of breaks such as leave from work, festive periods and holiday time for people to recharge their minds from school and work. School and work are essential to ensure citizens earn income, educate their minds, find careers in an area of interest, and live everyday life. Breaks however involve taking time off for relaxing and going on holidays. However, a common habit would see citizens return to school and work commonly forgetting routines such as everyday tasks, taking idle breaks, transport to school or work and changing into uniform.
The Easy Read Toolbox aimed to revolutionize intellectual disabilities through icon and layout design as an effective method to teach contexts easily. The new year in 2024, required a set of icons to teach procedures and habits when returning to school and work. Entering the new year would see citizens return to working jobs after Christmas and New Year’s breaks, as well as school holidays closely ending. The icons hope to assist with work focus and consistent school performance to ensure efficient preparation for the users.
The design involves a set of icons to display physical settings, required attire, essential equipment and common routines. The designs involve work or school building, office or work items such as pens and laptops, and user experiences such as packing lunches, transportation to work to socialising during lunch breaks. The icons serve as a reminder for common tasks involved at school or work to assist with work task focus, school performance and retaining work attention. Hopefully, the designs ensure users are aware of the common activities to create positive wellness and routines at work or school such as refreshing the mind during breaks, sleeping appropriate hours and packing required assets each day.
