Intellectual disabilities restrict the ability to learn and have an ongoing effect to maintain positive health and well-being. The effect creates barriers to help understand to manage activities on health such as movement, exercise, and physical activity. Lacking physical movement because of learning restrictions then create ongoing health issues of inactivity, obesity, lack of sleep and weak muscle or joints.
The Easy Read Toolbox envisioned applying thoughtful layout design and simplistic visual information as a method for easy learning through various topics. However, it was noted that intellectual disabilities create a “self-identity” obstacle which creates barriers to finding personal interests and hobbies. As the obstacle affects physical activity preference commonly based on a social level, as the disability varies by being connective or independent. The barrier then requires inclusive communication such as natural movement or incidental exercises beyond sports and athletics.
The design consisted of icons of people participating in different activities to convey the functions and mechanics such as walking and swimming. Settings were applied to show the environment of different physical activities such as walking around shops and hiking on mountains. The design allows the end-users to understand the situations involved in styles and to be aware of the distinct areas of physical activity, that movement, exercise, and physical activity is for everyone.
