Intellectual disabilities create barriers within society that affect inclusion and an individual’s identity such as personal interests, career preferences and interpersonal growth. Inclusion is necessary to ensure personal growth can be created such as education, social connection, and workplace development. It is essential to ensure social issues such as unemployment and homelessness do not occur and affect learning environments, shatter dreams, social connections, and sustainable health.
The Easy Read Toolbox strived to change the learning style for intellectual disabilities by analysing layout design to create an easy learning environment. A requirement was to educate life domains and teach the need for income, education, and interests. The set of icons was to educate everyday living and avoid the defined social issues that damage health.
The set of icons was used to communicate the need for personal growth to assist in helping a person find an identity and self-image. It ensures that any individual, particularly those with learning barriers, understands each individual has rights and morals. As such ensuring a person has self-control of their life choices to set their path. The set of icons hopes for those with learning barriers to find a suitable field of education, employment, values, and social connections.
