Intellectual disabilities create barriers to understanding the need for health services such as attending clinics for health checks, monitoring health conditions and managing well-being. The barriers have ongoing effects when health issues occur such as understanding the need for medical services, how to recognise health conditions, or places to attend when health issues arise. Therefore, leads to continued health risks, unhealthy conditions and being cautious about attending health services.
The Easy Read Toolbox worked alongside the Health Care Consumers Associations (HCCA) which offer varied health services. To assist the field of intellectual disabilities, required communicating the need to attend HCCA’s services and the need to understand self-care, health management and reliability of healthcare services. Through thoughtful layout and infographic design strived to better communicate various forms of content to disrupt the field of intellectual disabilities.
A set of icons required an understanding of the quality of services provided by HCCA and how the provider can address various health needs. The icons required how the organisation can assist patients with different health needs such as checkups, health improvement or diagnoses. In addition, the quality of the services to build trust with the end-user such as catering for needs, responsive and safer capabilities.
The design required translating the HCCA’s booklets to communicate a theme of going to hospitals, services, and clinics. The theme required to focus on explaining about staying at these facilities, benefits and essential needs of these services.
